This is one of the more interesting games on the board because both teams come in at 6-1, but I trust Texas Tech's path to victory far more than Arizona's. The records look nearly identical. The matchups don't. When I break this game down, I keep coming back to the same conclusion: Texas Tech is built better for this specific contest.
Arizona's defense has received plenty of attention this season, and for good reason. The Wildcats are allowing just 16.7 points per game and continue to win at the line of scrimmage. Last week's 39-3 win over Iowa State was another statement showing from a defense that has quietly become one of the strongest units in the Big 12.
The problem is that Texas Tech brings a much different offensive profile than most of the teams Arizona has faced. The Red Raiders can run the football, control tempo, and create balance that prevents defenses from keying in on one element of the attack. That's important against a team whose defensive success has been built partly on dictating game flow.
What really stands out is the situational spot for Texas Tech. They're coming off a disappointing loss to Cincinnati after allowing 255 rushing yards. Teams tend to respond well after getting physically beaten the week before, especially at home. I expect a much sharper effort from the Red Raiders in this spot.
On the other side, Arizona's offense has been productive, averaging more than 36 points per game, but it hasn't always been clean. Turnovers continue to pop up at the wrong times, and that's dangerous against a Texas Tech defense that has generated takeaways all season, including an impressive 13 interceptions.
The spread play ties directly into what I expect from the Texas Tech defense. While the Red Raiders have had issues defending the pass, they've been much stronger against the run. Holding opponents to just over 100 rushing yards per game has allowed them to force offenses into less comfortable situations.
That also leads directly into my favorite prop from this matchup: Will Hammond under 190.5 passing yards. At first glance, the line seems reasonable because Hammond has had several games over 200 yards this season. Once you dig deeper, the under starts making more sense.
Arizona's pass defense is far better than the public probably realizes. The Wildcats are allowing barely over 200 passing yards per game, have surrendered only five passing touchdowns all season, and consistently force quarterbacks into shorter, less aggressive throws.
Recent form supports it too. Hammond has exceeded this number only sporadically, and his production has often been volume-based rather than explosive. Over his last five games, he's averaged just over 214 passing yards, but that includes favorable matchups against weaker secondaries than the one he'll see this week.
I also think game script helps the under. Texas Tech's best path to victory is establishing the run and playing complementary football. Arizona's defense has been vulnerable to sustained rushing attacks more than explosive passing games, so I expect the Red Raiders to lean heavily on the ground game rather than asking Hammond to throw 40 times.
The combination of Texas Tech's rushing identity and Arizona's defensive strengths creates a natural cap on passing production. Hammond doesn't need to play poorly for this under to cash. He simply needs Texas Tech to follow the formula that gives them the best chance to win.
At the end of the day, I'm backing the home team to bounce back after last week's loss and trusting Arizona's defense to keep Hammond's numbers in check. Texas Tech's ability to create turnovers, run the football, and control game flow gives them the edge, while Hammond's yardage total feels a little too high against one of the better defenses he'll face all season.
