East Carolina is clearly the more established program coming into this matchup, but I'm not convinced the Pirates should be laying nearly 25 points here. There's a significant gap between these teams on paper, yet both programs are dealing with considerable roster turnover. At this number, I'm more interested in taking the points than backing ECU to win by a massive margin.
East Carolina finished 22-10 last season, but the roster looks considerably different heading into this campaign. The Pirates return just four players and have brought in 10 newcomers. That's a lot of new pieces to work into the rotation, and it may take some time before this group finds the consistency needed to dominate opponents on a nightly basis.
Charleston Southern is facing an even bigger rebuilding project. The Buccaneers have added 13 newcomers, retained just one player from last season, and will be operating under new head coach Tim Hays. There's obviously plenty of uncertainty with that much turnover, and I'm not pretending this is a team we can confidently project based on last year's performances.
The previous meeting certainly favors East Carolina, which came away with a convincing 91-62 victory. However, I wouldn't use that 29-point result as the sole basis for backing the Pirates again. Both teams have undergone significant roster changes, making last season's head-to-head result less reliable as a guide for this matchup.
One interesting aspect of Charleston Southern's new roster is the size it brings to the frontcourt. The Buccaneers have 6-foot-9 Celina Vilcinskas and 6-foot-7 freshman Happy Arune available inside. That gives them some legitimate length to work with, and while having size doesn't automatically translate into strong rebounding or interior defense, it's an encouraging starting point when catching this many points.
The biggest obstacle for Charleston Southern is getting everyone on the same page. With only one returning player, chemistry and execution are legitimate question marks. A completely new group can struggle with defensive rotations, offensive timing, and late-game situations. That's why I'm not looking to make this a heavy investment, even with a number that initially stands out.
Charleston Southern doesn't necessarily need to be competitive throughout the entire game; it simply needs to avoid getting completely run off the floor. Last season's meeting finished with 153 points, but expecting another high-scoring game based on that result alone would be a mistake. With both programs introducing so many new players, there isn't enough of an edge for me to take a position on the total.
East Carolina should have the advantage in overall talent and experience as a program, but that doesn't automatically make it a worthwhile bet at this price. The Pirates are also integrating 10 newcomers, while Charleston Southern has its own challenges under a new coaching staff. I'm looking for ECU to win, but asking them to cover almost 25 points is a different proposition.
I'm taking Charleston Southern with the points, but keeping the exposure modest. My projected 10-point margin makes +24.5 difficult to ignore, even with the Buccaneers' roster uncertainty. I don't need to call for an outright upset here. I just need Charleston Southern to stay within striking distance and make East Carolina work for the cover.
