Tampa Bay Rays (Nick Martinez) at Colorado Rockies (Tomoyuki Sugano) Prediction & Betting Pick | MLB Regular Season August 5, 2026

Pitching Matchup: Martinez vs. Sugano at Coors Field

Tampa Bay–Colorado is one of those matchups where the ballpark itself becomes part of the handicap, and both starters walk in with very different strengths and vulnerabilities. Nick Martinez has been the Rays’ most stable arm all season — not flashy, not overpowering, but incredibly efficient. A 2.77 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and 4% walk rate tell you exactly what he is: a control-first pitcher who survives by limiting mistakes. But Coors Field is the one place where that profile gets stress‑tested, and tonight he has to navigate it with a bullpen that was emptied in yesterday’s 11‑inning game.

Martinez’s last outing was a rough one — 6 earned runs against the White Sox — and now he heads into a park where sinkers and cutters lose their movement. That’s a problem because those pitches make up the core of his arsenal. Without horizontal break, hitters get cleaner looks, and Martinez doesn’t have the velocity to simply overpower anyone. Coors has been kind to him in the past, but this version of the Rockies lineup is far more dangerous than the ones he faced years ago.

Colorado has been one of the best offenses in baseball against right‑handed pitching. They’re top five on the season, top five over their last seven games, and they’ve hung 18 earned runs on their last three RHP matchups. They’ve been hitting for average, hitting for power, and doing it consistently. Even though Martinez is more reliable than someone like Freddy Peralta, this is still a brutal assignment.

Tomoyuki Sugano has been part of Colorado’s rotation struggles all year — 4.47 ERA, 14% barrel rate, and very little swing‑and‑miss. But he’s quietly put together a solid three‑game stretch: 2.95 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, and just a 2% walk rate. Two of those starts came at Coors, which is encouraging, but the advanced metrics still paint him as a pitcher living on borrowed time. His splits are better at home, but he’s been worse against left‑handed hitters, and Tampa has plenty of lefty bats who can punish mistakes.

The Rays’ offense has been strong against righties all season — top 10 vs RHP, hitting .259 with a .403 slugging — and they’ve already shelled two Rockies right-handers in this series. Adding Liam Hicks has only made them deeper. Even if Sugano has looked sharper lately, this is not the type of lineup he’s built to suppress. Tampa’s plate discipline and ability to string together rallies should give them multiple scoring windows.

Bullpen Breakdown: Rays vs. Rockies

The bullpen situation is the biggest factor in this game. Both teams emptied their pens yesterday, and that means starters are getting long leashes. For Martinez, that’s especially important — Tampa needs him to cover innings. He’s efficient enough to do it, and the Rays’ defense (second in MLB in defensive efficiency) gives him support. Even if he gives up runs, he should still work deep enough to clear 16.5 outs.

Colorado’s bullpen is a completely different story. A 5.51 ERA, 30th in MLB, and a 57.8% save rate make them one of the worst relief units in baseball. They’ve allowed 649 runs, blown 19 saves, and consistently failed to protect leads. If Sugano exits early — and he usually does — Tampa gets multiple innings against a bullpen that hasn’t been able to stop anyone.

The Rays’ bullpen, even when tired, is still far better. A 75.9% save rate, 85 holds, and top‑10 run prevention give them a major late‑game edge. If Martinez hands them a lead, they’re far more likely to protect it than Colorado is.

Coors Field also makes the over 11.5 extremely live. Both offenses match up well with the opposing starter, both bullpens are worn down, and the ballpark inflates scoring even when pitchers are sharp. If Tampa gets rolling, they can push double digits on their own — and Colorado has enough firepower to contribute.

This game lines up with three clean angles: Tampa’s offensive edge, Martinez’s workload and efficiency, and a high‑scoring environment that favors the better lineup and bullpen.

Our Pick

I’m backing the Rays, backing the over, and backing Martinez to go deep.
