Two of college football’s most storied programs collide in Week 1 as No. 8 Alabama visits Florida State in a marquee SEC vs. ACC showdown.
The Crimson Tide enter Year 2 of the Kalen DeBoer era with playoff aspirations after a “down year” in 2024, finishing 9-4 and missing the inaugural 12-team postseason. DeBoer hands the offense to new starting quarterback Ty Simpson, a former five-star talent who steps into a loaded situation. Simpson has elite targets in Ryan Williams, Germie Bernard, and Isaiah Horton, and will be protected by one of the nation’s top offensive lines led by Kadyn Proctor and Parker Brailsford.
Florida State, meanwhile, is looking to bounce back from a disastrous 2-10 season just one year after finishing 13-1 and controversially missing the 2023 College Football Playoff. Head coach Mike Norvell retooled his staff, hiring Gus Malzahn as offensive coordinator and Tony White to run the defense. The Seminoles also turned heavily to the transfer portal, with QB Tommy Castellanos (Boston College) headlining a class of newcomers expected to rejuvenate the offense.
The problem? Chemistry takes time. FSU has eight new offensive starters, including an almost entirely rebuilt offensive line. Castellanos’ mobility will be tested immediately against an Alabama front seven that features Deontae Lawson, Justin Jefferson, and LT Overton.
This game also represents a revenge storyline for FSU fans. In 2023, the Seminoles were controversially left out of the CFP in favor of Alabama — the team that now comes to Tallahassee to spoil their opener. But despite a sold-out Doak Campbell Stadium and an upgraded roster, the Seminoles face a huge uphill battle against a deeper, more experienced Crimson Tide squad.
Alabama has not lost a season opener since 2001 and is 9-1 ATS in Week 1 games over the past decade. Expect some first-half nerves from Simpson, but over four quarters, the Tide’s talent advantage on the lines and at the skill positions should allow them to pull away.
