South Carolina and UConn meeting again on this stage feels inevitable, but the dynamics are completely different from last year’s title game. UConn hasn’t taken a single loss all season, and the way they’ve handled March — even when the offense dipped — shows how complete this roster is. Their defense has been suffocating, forcing turnovers at an absurd rate and holding elite teams to some of their worst shooting nights of the year. When you combine that with an offense led by Azzi Fudd and a roster shooting the ball at one of the highest clips in the country, you get a team that simply hasn’t been pushed for months.

South Carolina is dangerous, no question. Joyce Edwards has turned into a true No. 1 option, and Ta’Niya Latson gives them a scorer who can take over a game when she’s rolling. But this group doesn’t have the same depth or Final Four experience as past Staley teams. Outside of Raven and Tessa Johnson, most of this rotation is new to this stage, and that matters when you’re facing a team that’s been steamrolling everyone with the same core all season.

UConn’s biggest edge is how well they scheme defensively. They take away your first option, then your second, and then force you into rushed possessions you don’t want. South Carolina has had stretches this season where the offense stalls, and against a defense this sharp, those stretches can snowball quickly.

Sarah Strong is the matchup problem that tilts this game. She’s the likely national player of the year for a reason — she defends, rebounds, shoots, and passes at an elite level. When UConn needs a stabilizer, she’s the one who settles them. And when they need a bucket, Fudd has been nails in every big moment.

The Huskies also have something this version of South Carolina doesn’t: continuity in pressure games. They’ve been here, they’ve won here, and they’ve handled the weight of an undefeated season without blinking. Even in their one close call — the Michigan game — they executed late like a veteran group.

South Carolina’s young pieces have stepped up in this tournament, especially Makeer, who suddenly looks like an X‑factor. But relying on freshmen and transfers to carry heavy minutes against the best defense in the country is a tough ask.

UConn’s press is another problem. They’ve turned elite guards over all season, and South Carolina has had turnover issues when pressured. If the Gamecocks get stuck playing from behind, the pace shifts into UConn’s hands, and that’s where the gap widens.

The Huskies also have the shooting edge. Fudd at 45% from deep, plus the spacing they generate with Strong and Quiñonez, forces defenses to pick their poison. South Carolina’s defense is good, but UConn’s ball movement and shot quality are on another level right now.

Both teams are elite, but UConn is simply more polished, more experienced, and more balanced at this stage. South Carolina can hang for stretches, but over 40 minutes, the Huskies’ defensive pressure and offensive efficiency should create separation.
