Colorado Rockies (Ryan Feltner) at Arizona Diamondbacks (Merrill Kelly) Prediction & Betting Pick | MLB Regular Season August 12, 2026

Colorado–Arizona gives us one of those matchups where both starters walk in with red flags, but one of them is far more likely to get exposed. Ryan Feltner has been in a rough stretch — and not the kind you can hand‑wave away. His last three starts have been a mess: 6.61 ERA, 1.59 WHIP, opponents hitting .328, and the strikeouts falling off a cliff. The underlying metrics are just as ugly, with a 5.95 FIP and 5.43 SIERA telling the same story. When your fastball and sinker are getting hammered at over .300, you’re in trouble against a lineup that’s heating up.

Arizona’s bats have finally woken up. Over their last seven games, they’re top‑4 in SLG, top‑3 in ISO, and sitting at a 112 wRC+. And they’ve been even better at home. They’ve faced a mix of elite and mediocre righties recently — Yamamoto and Williams threw gems, Vasquez somehow tossed six scoreless — but Feltner is nowhere near that tier. This is a get‑right spot for a lineup that’s already trending upward.

Merrill Kelly’s surface numbers look fine — 3.31 ERA over his last three — but the peripherals are waving a big red flag. A 5.21 SIERA, 5.19 xFIP, and a .346 xwOBA show he’s been living dangerously. His walk rate has spiked to 13.2%, and the hard contact is a real concern: 12.5% barrel rate, 18.4% blast rate. That’s elite‑level bad. But the matchup helps him. Colorado’s offense is a completely different team away from Coors.

The Rockies are top‑five in almost every offensive metric at home, but on the road they fall to a 96 wRC+ and a .240 AVG. They still have thump — McCarthy, Carrigg, Moniak can all do damage — but the consistency disappears outside Denver. Recent righties have allowed 2.9 ER per game to Colorado, but that number is inflated by a couple of blowups. The road version of this lineup is far less threatening.

Kelly’s biggest vulnerability is the first time through the order — opponents hitting .299 — but once he settles in, his changeup (32% whiff) becomes a real weapon. And Arizona’s bullpen gives him a safety net. The Diamondbacks hold a 66.7% save rate, a top‑10 defensive efficiency, and one of the lowest inherited‑runner scoring rates in baseball. Colorado’s bullpen, meanwhile, is bottom‑five across the board.

The Rockies’ pitching staff has been the worst in baseball: 5.48 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, 164 HR allowed, and the worst defensive efficiency in MLB. Their bullpen has blown 20 saves, allowed 30.5% of inherited runners to score, and ranks 29th in holds. If Arizona gets to Feltner early — and they should — this game can snowball quickly.

Arizona’s offense matches up perfectly with Feltner’s weaknesses. His fastball and sinker get crushed, and the Diamondbacks have been hitting velocity well during this recent stretch. His changeup is his only real weapon, but Arizona has handled changeups better than most teams this month.

Kelly isn’t in elite form, but he doesn’t need to be. He just needs to be better than Feltner — and with Colorado’s road splits, Arizona’s home form, and the bullpen gap, that’s a comfortable expectation.

This is a spot where Arizona should control the game from the first inning and never look back.
