Indianapolis Colts at Washington Commanders Prediction & Betting Pick | NFL Week 4 October 3, 2026
The market is still pricing this matchup based on names rather than what we've actually seen through three weeks. Both defenses have had major issues, but the weaknesses line up particularly well with the player props I'm targeting. There are clear volume angles here, and that's where I'm focusing.
Indianapolis comes in off a narrow win over Houston, but the underlying numbers still raise concerns. The Colts are allowing over 30 points per game, rank near the bottom of the league against both the run and the pass, and continue to struggle getting off the field. Their defensive metrics remain significantly worse than their record suggests.
That's part of the reason I like Marcus Mariota's rushing over. The Colts generate pressure up front and can collapse pockets quickly, forcing quarterbacks to improvise. Mariota has never been afraid to tuck it and run when protection breaks down, and this matchup should create several scramble opportunities. Asking him to get to 27 yards feels very manageable.
The same defensive issues also point me toward Jacory Croskey-Merritt's rushing over. Washington's ground game hasn't been efficient on paper, but opportunity matters more than early-season averages. If Rachaad White is limited or unavailable, Croskey-Merritt should see an even larger share of the workload against a Colts defense giving up chunk gains on the ground and struggling to finish tackles consistently.
One thing Indianapolis has done poorly all season is tackle in space. Missed tackles have turned ordinary runs into explosive gains, and that's exactly the kind of weakness I want to attack when betting rushing props. Croskey-Merritt doesn't need a massive workload if he's consistently reaching the second level.
On the Indianapolis side, I'm taking a different approach with Jonathan Taylor under 89.5 rushing yards. Taylor remains one of the league's premier backs, but this number feels inflated given the current state of the Colts offense. He's averaging just 3.4 yards per carry through three games, and Indianapolis hasn't consistently created running lanes against competent defensive fronts.
Game script is another concern for Taylor backers. Washington's offense has shown enough firepower to keep this game competitive, and if Indianapolis ends up leaning more heavily on Daniel Jones and the passing game, Taylor's carry count could fall short of what he needs to clear this number comfortably.
The Colts' passing attack has quietly started funneling through Josh Downs, and that's where I see the strongest position on the board. With Michael Pittman no longer leading the receiver room and Alec Pierce dealing with injury concerns, Downs has stepped directly into the WR1 role and the volume reflects it.
The target share tells the story. Downs has seen nine and eleven targets over the last two games, converting those opportunities into productive outings while becoming Daniel Jones' most trusted option on key downs. Consistent volume is usually the first thing I look for when betting receiving props, and Downs checks that box.
Just as important is the matchup. Washington has been one of the league's most generous defenses against wide receivers, already allowing huge performances to players such as CeeDee Lamb and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. The Commanders' secondary has struggled to contain route technicians and slot receivers, which fits Downs' skill set perfectly.
Overall, I expect points, sustained drives, and plenty of opportunities for both offenses to move the ball. Downs' workload continues to trend upward, Mariota's legs should be featured against an aggressive front, Croskey-Merritt has a strong path to volume, and Taylor's rushing number looks a little too high relative to his current efficiency. That's the card I'm rolling with for Colts vs. Commanders.
