Philadelphia 76ers at New York Knicks Prediction & Betting Pick | NBA Regular Season October 20, 2026

This number immediately caught my attention because it's significantly lower than what we've grown accustomed to seeing from Tyrese Maxey. The market is clearly adjusting for Philadelphia's offseason additions, but I think it may have overcorrected. Maxey is still the engine that makes this offense go, and Opening Night at Madison Square Garden feels like a spot where he's heavily involved from the jump.

Last season, Maxey averaged 27.7 points per game, clearing this line in 65 of 82 games. That's an elite hit rate for a player whose offensive responsibility remained consistent regardless of opponent. Even with new star power around him, asking him to score 22 points is a much different challenge than asking him to reach his season average.

The new-look Sixers should actually help him. Defenses can no longer load up exclusively on Maxey when players like LeBron James and Jaylen Brown are sharing the floor. More spacing, fewer double teams, and cleaner driving lanes should create higher-quality scoring opportunities than he's enjoyed in previous seasons.

I also love the matchup history. Maxey has consistently played well against New York, especially at Madison Square Garden. In four regular-season meetings with the Knicks last year, he cleared this number in all four games while averaging 30 points per contest.

Those weren't empty performances either. He posted scoring totals of 30, 36, 22, and 32, showing he can find success against different defensive schemes and game scripts. Some players simply see the floor well in certain arenas, and Maxey has looked extremely comfortable playing in New York.

Road performance is another major reason I'm backing this. Last season, Maxey actually elevated his play away from Philadelphia. He topped this line in 35 of 41 road games, averaging nearly 28.5 points per contest while maintaining strong shooting efficiency.

The volume remains difficult to ignore. He averaged over 21 field-goal attempts per game last season and regularly played close to 39 minutes in competitive matchups. Even if those numbers dip slightly with new teammates, the reduction shouldn't be significant enough to justify a line this low.

From a motivational standpoint, this is also an interesting spot. The Knicks ended Philadelphia's season, and the Sixers spent the summer aggressively reshaping the roster to compete with teams exactly like New York. Opening night offers the perfect opportunity to make an early statement.

I expect the Knicks to focus plenty of defensive attention on Joel Embiid and the star additions, which could leave Maxey attacking secondary defenders more often than usual. That's generally where he's at his best, using his speed to get downhill and create scoring chances before defenses can rotate.

The game environment should help as well. These teams know each other well, both feature elite offensive talent, and neither side is likely to back down. Competitive games typically mean max minutes for star players, and that's exactly what we want when backing a scoring prop.

When I put it all together, the number feels too low for a player with Maxey's scoring profile. The role remains strong, the matchup history is excellent, the road splits are elite, and the supporting cast may actually help his efficiency rather than hurt his volume. I only need 22 points from a player who averaged nearly 28 a night last season.
