Utah Jazz at Memphis Grizzlies Prediction & Betting Pick | NBA Regular Season October 21, 2026
Opening night is all about identifying players whose role has outgrown the number attached to them, and Keyonte George checks every box. Utah handed him the keys to the franchise, rewarded him with a major extension this summer, and enters the season expecting him to be the centerpiece of a team that's no longer focused on development alone. The books are hanging a number that sits well below where his production landed for most of last season.
George broke out in a big way last year, averaging 23.6 points per game while continuing to expand his offensive responsibilities. More importantly, he wasn't piling up points because of hot shooting stretches. The volume was consistent. He averaged more than 16 field-goal attempts per game and regularly operated as Utah's primary scorer.
When I look at scoring props, I'm always paying attention to role security. There are no questions here. George is the lead guard, the primary creator, and the first option whenever Utah needs a basket. Those are exactly the players I want backing in the low 20s.
The matchup is appealing too. Memphis struggled defensively last season, finishing near the bottom of the league in points allowed and showing weaknesses at the point of attack. Opposing guards found success against them throughout the year, and many of the same concerns remain entering this season.
Digging deeper into the defensive profile, over half of George's scoring comes from areas of the floor where Memphis has consistently been vulnerable. That's an important matchup detail because we're not relying on difficult shot-making. We're attacking defensive weaknesses that align directly with George's strengths.
History against this opponent is another reason I like the over. George faced Memphis twice last season and cleared this number both times, averaging 31.5 points per game. One of those performances turned into a 39-point eruption in this same building, where he took over late and closed the game himself.
Some players are comfortable in certain matchups, and George has looked completely confident against the Grizzlies. The pace, the defensive coverages, and the overall game environment have all worked in his favor.
His road production is also stronger than many people realize. Last season he cashed this line in two-thirds of his away games, averaging roughly 24 points per contest. That's significant because many young guards experience major drop-offs outside their home arena. George didn't.
The minutes trend may be my favorite part of the handicap. Whenever he surpassed 30 minutes, his scoring numbers exploded. He cleared this total in 33 of 41 games while averaging more than 27 points per game in those contests. Opportunity drives production, and George consistently delivers when his workload is elevated.
Utah's offseason changes could actually make life easier for him. With Jaren Jackson Jr. commanding defensive attention inside and rookie Darryn Peterson adding another offensive threat, opposing defenses won't be able to zero in on George the way they did at times last year. Cleaner looks and more space are always welcome for a high-volume scorer.
Add everything together and this feels like a strong opening-night spot. George enters the year as the face of the franchise, owns favorable history against Memphis, thrives when his minutes climb, and gets a matchup against a defense that has struggled to contain productive guards. I expect Utah to lean heavily on him from the start, and 21 points feels very attainable.
