The No. 21 Monmouth Hawks open their 2025 season with lofty expectations and one of the most explosive offenses in the FCS. Led by All-American quarterback Derek Robertson, last year’s FCS passing yards leader, Monmouth ranked second nationally in scoring at 39 points per game and first in total offense with nearly 490 yards per contest.
Robertson’s arsenal of weapons returns largely intact, including WRs Josh Derry and TJ Speight and TE Jack Neri, all preseason All-CAA first-team selections. Against a Colgate defense that ranked 116th against the pass last season, surrendering 268.1 yards per game and 32 touchdowns through the air, the Hawks’ passing attack is primed for a huge opener.
Colgate enters 2025 under new head coach Curt Fitzpatrick, who arrives after winning a Division III national championship with Cortland in 2023. The Raiders finished just 2-10 last season, ranking near the bottom of the FCS in both scoring offense and defense. While WR Treyvhon Saunders headlines the returnees after an 88-catch campaign, questions at quarterback and a rebuilt offensive line make it difficult to see the Raiders keeping pace.
Monmouth’s defense remains the biggest question mark, but the Hawks added impact transfers across the front seven and bring back one of the deepest secondaries in the CAA. Even with some early-season growing pains defensively, Robertson and his weapons should light up a Colgate defense that simply doesn’t have the personnel to slow them down.
Look for Monmouth to start fast, pile on the points, and cruise to a comfortable road victory.
