Florida Gators at Texas Longhorns Prediction & Betting Pick | College Football October 17, 2026
This line isn't just about rankings. It's about where these teams are built strongest, and Texas has a clear advantage in the area that matters most in this matchup: the line of scrimmage. Florida wants to establish the run, control tempo, and play downhill football. The problem is they're walking into one of the toughest run defenses in the SEC.
Texas is allowing just 96 rushing yards per game and has consistently forced opponents away from their preferred game plans. That's bad news for a Florida offense that averages over 200 rushing yards per contest and relies heavily on that ground game to create favorable passing situations.
The injury situation only strengthens the Longhorns' case. Florida is already expected to be without Duke Clark, and multiple key pieces in the passing attack enter the week with question marks. Against an average defense, those absences might be manageable. Against Texas, every missing weapon matters.
Last week's loss to South Carolina exposed some of Florida's weaknesses. The Gators were held to 120 rushing yards on 38 carries and struggled to create explosive plays when they fell behind. That's concerning heading into a road environment where points won't come easily.
I also trust Texas to respond after the Oklahoma loss. Rivalry defeats tend to sharpen elite programs, and I expect the Longhorns to come out with urgency. Falling to 4-2 isn't something a Top-10 team wants to entertain, especially at home.
Defensively, the numbers are difficult to ignore. Texas is giving up just 16 points per game, allowing fewer than 170 passing yards per contest, and has surrendered only two passing touchdowns all season. There simply aren't many weaknesses to attack.
On the other side, Florida's defense has been vulnerable almost everywhere. The Gators rank near the bottom of the country against the pass and are allowing 29 points per game. They've already given up 21 total offensive touchdowns through six games.
That's where I think the game starts to separate. Texas may not have the flashiest offense in the country, but it is efficient enough to take advantage of defensive weaknesses. The Longhorns don't need to score 50 points here; they just need steady production against a defense that has struggled to get stops.
Another thing working in Texas' favor is third-down defense. The Longhorns have been excellent at getting opponents off the field, holding teams to just over 30% conversions. If Florida can't establish the run early, sustained drives become a major challenge.
Game flow is important as well. If Texas grabs an early lead, Florida may be forced into a more pass-heavy approach than it wants. That's a dangerous path against a secondary that's been one of the better units in the conference all season.
When I put everything together, the matchup feels one-sided. Texas owns the better defense, the healthier roster, the home-field advantage, and the trench advantage. Florida is capable of making plays offensively, but too many factors are working against them heading into Austin. I expect the Longhorns to respond from last week's loss and pull away late.
