Ohio State at Indiana Prediction & Betting Pick | College Football October 17, 2026

This is the type of game where elite players tend to remind everyone why they're elite. Jeremiah Smith has already established himself as the centerpiece of Ohio State's offense, but the biggest thing I've noticed this season is how his production changes depending on the competitiveness of the matchup. When the Buckeyes are cruising and resting starters in the second half, the volume naturally dips. When the game matters for four quarters, Smith becomes the entire passing attack.

That's exactly what we have here. This isn't Maryland. This isn't a game Ohio State expects to have wrapped up by halftime. This is a Top-10 showdown against an undefeated Indiana team, and every possession will matter.

Smith's usage is already ridiculous. He's averaging 8 receptions, 11.2 targets, and 155+ receiving yards per game pace when heavily involved, while commanding an enormous 35% target share. In today's college football landscape, very few receivers dominate their offense to that degree.

The matchup may appear difficult at first glance because Indiana's defense has been excellent overall. The Hoosiers are allowing fewer than 12 points per game and enter undefeated for a reason. They've earned national respect with physical football and disciplined execution.

But when I break down the secondary specifically, I don't see a unit that's equipped to consistently handle a receiver like Smith. Indiana has allowed some quality receivers to find success this year, including Nebraska's Jacory Barney, who cleared the century mark against them. If those opportunities existed, Smith is more than capable of turning them into explosive gains.

History matters here too. Smith has already faced Indiana in a high-stakes environment and absolutely torched them. In last season's Big Ten Championship Game, he went for 144 receiving yards on eight catches against a Hoosier defense that arguably had more NFL-caliber talent in the secondary than the current version does.

The spot itself is another reason I love the over. Ohio State is entering the most important stretch of its regular season, with Indiana, USC, and Oregon all looming. This is not a situation where the coaching staff is managing workloads or protecting stars. The Buckeyes need their best players on the field and heavily involved.

I also expect Indiana's offense to do enough to keep the game competitive. The Hoosiers average over 40 points per game and take care of the football better than almost anyone in the country. If they can push Ohio State into a four-quarter battle, that's excellent news for Smith's yardage outlook.

The target projection is what really sells me. With a 35% share of the passing game, Smith doesn't need an outrageous catch total. A typical workload of eight to ten receptions can get this number home quickly when you're averaging nearly 20 yards per catch.

We've already seen his ceiling against quality opponents. The most impressive example came against Iowa, where he erupted for 200+ yards in a game where Ohio State actually had to lean on its passing attack. That's the blueprint I'm expecting here.

Everything lines up. Competitive game script, elite volume, proven production against Indiana, and a receiver who continues to look like the most dominant skill player in college football. When Ohio State needs a play, the ball finds Jeremiah Smith. In a matchup with major playoff implications, I expect that trend to continue.
