New York Knicks at Boston Celtics Prediction & Betting Pick | NBA October 23, 2026
The scoring will always grab the headlines, but the biggest change in Boston's offense this year might be Jayson Tatum's role as a full-time creator. With Jaylen Brown no longer in the picture, more of the offense is flowing directly through Tatum, and we got an early glimpse of that in the opener when he handed out 11 assists despite shooting just 6-for-23 from the field.
What stood out wasn't the final assist number, it was the process. Tatum generated 17 potential assists and constantly initiated the offense. That's the type of underlying volume I want to see when betting assist props because it doesn't rely on unsustainable shooting from teammates.
Boston's roster construction also plays into this. Defenses can't simply load up on Tatum when Paul George is sharing the floor. George dropped 38 points in his Celtics debut, and that kind of scoring threat creates cleaner passing windows and easier assist opportunities for Tatum throughout the game.
The matchup against New York is another reason I'm interested. The Knicks have been a strong defensive team overall, but they were only middle-of-the-pack at limiting assists to opposing forwards last season. More importantly, this is a matchup where Boston typically puts the ball in Tatum's hands and lets him dictate the tempo.
We've already seen evidence of that. The last time Tatum faced New York, he finished with eight assists and generated 17 potential assists. Even in a game where the scoring wasn't overwhelming, the playmaking workload remained massive.
His recent assist trend has quietly been excellent as well. Tatum has cleared this line in seven of his last ten games while averaging over seven assists during that span. That's the profile of a player whose passing role has evolved beyond simply being a secondary option.
Minutes are another important piece of the handicap. When Tatum gets extended run, the assists usually follow. In games where he's logged at least 31 minutes, he's consistently landed around seven assists per night while generating double-digit potential assists.
The Celtics are also coming off a loss to Detroit, which should only increase the urgency in their home opener. I expect Joe Mazzulla to lean heavily on his stars, and that means the ball spending a lot of time in Tatum's hands as Boston looks to get back on track.
Game environment helps too. The Knicks have enough offensive firepower to keep this competitive, which should prevent Boston from pulling starters early. Close games are ideal for assist overs because they maximize minutes and late-game creation opportunities.
What I like most is that Tatum doesn't need an exceptional performance to cash this ticket. His current role naturally puts him in position to rack up assists. If teammates simply convert at a reasonable rate, seven assists is well within reach.
Boston's offense looks different this season, but Tatum remains at the center of everything. The shot volume will always be there, yet the expanded playmaking responsibility is what I'm targeting here. The opportunity, minutes, and offensive structure all point toward another productive passing night.
