Georgia Southern’s attack lives through JC French IV and playmaking around Camden Brown. French averages just under 210 passing yards per game with a 61.5% completion rate and has 14 TDs against six picks; Brown is a genuine vertical threat (80.3 ypg, 9 TDs) who gives the Eagles explosive upside. OJ Arnold provides balance on the ground at nearly 5.8 yards per carry, so this offense can strike quickly when protections hold and space opens.
Protection on the road has been a recurring issue for the Eagles, and that’s where Georgia Southern’s profile becomes fragile. They average 28.8 points but surrender long drives and big possessions that stretch their defense; the unit is yielding 35.4 points per game. Linebacker Brandon Tyson and MJ Stroud do what they can, but breakdowns in coverage and extended opponent possessions have repeatedly put the Eagles on their heels.
Appalachian State’s identity is more methodical: running back Rashod Dubinion drives their tempo and keeps opposing pass units off balance. Dubinion’s 756 yards at 5.5 YPC and the Mountaineers’ balanced play-calling make it hard to key on one phase. The QB room — AJ Swann and JJ Kohl — offers enough passing efficiency and touchdown upside to complement the ground game without forcing turnovers.
Defensively, App State brings consistent pressure and a stronger red-zone profile at home. The Mountaineers have racked up 18 sacks and allowed 27.6 points per game overall, but their home splits show improved situational defense. Colton Phares leads the tackling corps and the front-seven’s ability to collapse pockets should test Georgia Southern’s questionable pass protection.
Match-up wise, this tilts toward Appalachian State. If Dubinion controls the line of scrimmage and App State wins the possession battle, Georgia Southern’s defensive lapses and pass-protection weaknesses will get exposed. The Eagles can score in bursts, but sustaining drives against a physical, well-drilled Mountaineer front on their turf is a different problem.
I’m backing Appalachian State -5.5. The home-field edge, rush control, and a rush defense that pressures quarterbacks create the conditions for App State to lead through the second half and cover the number.
