Old Dominion’s balance and playmaking give them the edge in Norfolk. Colton Joseph is operating as a true dual threat — over 2,200 passing yards with 19 scores and another nine rushing TDs — and that kind of versatility forces defenses to defend the entire field. Give me the Monarchs to control early downs, keep drives alive, and make the Trojans work for every snap.

Troy’s offense has real weapons, but protection is an obvious scar. Tucker Kilcrease has moved the ball (about 1,400 yards, nine TDs) yet has been hammered — 34 sacks conceded — which consistently turns manageable downs into long-yardage situations. Tae Meadows supplies a reliable ground option, and the receiving group (Tray Taylor, RaRa Thomas, DJ Epps) can produce chunk plays, but when the pocket collapses those chances shrink fast.

Defensively, Troy can be disruptive when the front seven sets the tone. Jordan Stringer anchors the middle with consistent tackling, and Donnie Smith has generated pressure with six sacks. The Trojans do a decent job slowing big-play shots when they win up front, and their secondary has flashed turnover ability with a couple of interceptions from Jaquez White and Joe Lott.

Old Dominion matches up well up front and on third down. Their rush game averages north of five yards per carry, with Trequan Jones creating big chunks and Joseph adding tough yards on the ground. That run element keeps play-action honest and opens up intermediate and deep windows for Tre’ Brown III and Na’eem Abdul‑Rahim Gladding to work in space.

On the other side of the ball, ODU’s defense has tightened into form lately — 23 sacks on the season and just 27 points allowed across the last two games. Jerome Carter and Jeremy Mack Jr. have helped the unit win the trenches, and that pressure profile is exactly what will exacerbate Troy’s pass-problems and shorten drives into punts or negative plays.

I’m siding with Old Dominion -10. The Monarchs control the line of scrimmage, have a QB who threatens both ways, and bring a defensive front built to turn Troy’s protection into a liability. Expect ODU to win comfortably, manage the clock, and cover.
